It’s an Irish Claddagh ring. The heart is for love, the crown is for loyalty, and the hands are for friendship. It’s not *necessarily* an engagement ring, there are a number of ways to wear it. But this arrangement seems to suggest that.
The fact that the ring is on the palmistry hand rather than his own might mean he *was* engaged at some point, but something happened. And given what we’ve seen so far, “something happened” can mean quite a lot of things.
